Woman psychologist killed herself after paedophile attacked boy when he was allowed out unsupervised from secure unit where she worked

This is a very sad story about a Psychiatrist who took on the responsibility of a child sexual predator harming a child. The predators treatment team made the decision that he could have a two hour pass outside the hospital. Within ten minutes of being on his two hour pass, he attempted to rape a ten year old boy. This Psychiatrist felt so responsible and was so plagued with guilt she took her own life. Here is the original article in the Sun from November of 2011.http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3939951/Parents-fury-over-released-paedo.html I thought it would give readers some background into this life long child sexual predator. He is now locked up indefinitely for his actions toward the ten year old boy.

This child predator has even said that he will harm a child if he ever got out. I am sorry that the Psychiatrist felt so responsible and distraught that she took her life. The treatment team have made it clear that they all made the decision for the two hour pass, but the Psychiatrist felt it was her fault. That must have been a tough decision for the treatment team to make knowing that this child sexual predator has done this before. I suspect this is where a lot of her guilt came from. I know as a parent I spent my children's childhoods doing everything I could to make sure they never experienced sexual abuse. I am grateful that they didn't and would honestly be devastated if they had. I would have felt that I didn't do enough to protect them. The reality is that we can't be with our children every second out of every day. What we can do is arm them with knowledge. Knowledge that your body is your own and no one has a right to touch you. Knowledge that if an adult tells you "this is our little secret" that this isn't normal behavior between and adult and child. Knowledge that if an adult tells you that if you tell they'll harm your family to tell anyway because this is al lie to keep you quiet. Knowledge that if someone has ever touched you inappropriately you will be believed and supported. Knowledge that every child has the right to grow up abuse free. We need to do this so we prevent another generation of silence, where children aren't believed and adults who wish to harm children have free reign to continue their terror. Their reign of terror needs to end now. Rosie

Shaun Tudor subjected a 10-year-old boy to a terrifying sexual assault, just minutes after being released from a secure unit
Shaun Tudor subjected a 10-year-old boy to a terrifying sexual assault, just minutes after being released from a secure unit

A psychologist killed herself out of guilt after a paedophile attacked a child almost immediately after he was allowed to walk out of a secure unit unsupervised, an inquest heard yesterday.

Lisa Derriscott, 33, blamed herself even though it was a team decision to let Shaun Tudor out for two hours despite a history of attacking boys.
Minutes into his leave, Tudor dragged a ten-year-old boy into some bushes and subjected him to a terrifying sexual assault.

Two weeks later Dr Derriscott was found dead in a burning car after leaving suicide notes to her mother and partner saying it was her fault that the convicted sex offender, who has spent 23 years in psychiatric institutions, had been allowed to strike again.
Family and friends told the inquest she was consumed by guilt and could no longer live with herself.
While colleagues insisted the decision was made by a team of specialists and was signed off by the Ministry of Justice, Dr Derriscott felt solely responsible.
Following the attack in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire, in July last year the clinical psychologist, who was extremely dedicated to her job, ‘obsessed’ over what had happened.

She started behaving erratically and was often ‘quiet, distressed and withdrawn’, the inquest heard.
On August 3 she parked her Vauxhall Corsa in a field near Long Eaton, Derbyshire, where she lived with her partner Andrew Whittle and set it on fire while she was still inside.
She had taken an overdose of painkillers, but death was from smoke inhalation. Dr Derriscott killed herself the day before Tudor was due in court to admit the attack.
The sex offender, 43, who had previously assaulted a child while on leave from a different secure unit, was locked up indefinitely at Nottingham Crown Court.
Tudor was being held at the St Andrew’s Healthcare Centre last year when Dr Derriscott and her team decided he could be granted leave. Within ten minutes of walking out of the unit on July 20, he sexually assaulted and tried to rape his victim in Rainworth.

Tudor went on the run for eight hours before being arrested.
Assistant psychologist Meryl Lewis said it ‘certainly was not’ Dr Derriscott’s decision alone to release Tudor, who had learning difficulties and Asperger’s syndrome, but that she quickly came to blame herself. ‘I told her on the phone what had had happened, and she just said “Oh my God”.’
Dr Derriscott’s mother, Betty, told the hearing her daughter was normally a ‘lively, cheerful’ person, but after the phone call from Miss Lewis she ‘went very quiet’ and ‘looked distressed’.
Mr Whittle said his partner was ‘bubbly, optimistic and fun’, and he had never known her to be low or depressed.
But he told the hearing she became ‘quiet and withdrawn’ after Tudor attacked the boy, repeatedly blaming herself for what had happened and talking of ‘not being able to live with herself’ and ‘wanting to go to sleep and not wake up’.
Dr Derriscott had also told her supervisor, Dr Clive Long, that she had considered killing herself because of the incident, but he dismissed this because she did not fit the profile of the types of people most likely to take their lives.
Derby coroner Dr Robert Hunter recorded a verdict of suicide.
After the hearing, the father of Tudor’s victim said it had been ‘a double tragedy’. He said: ‘The doctor died, my son was attacked. My son died that day. He is a totally different child now.’
