2/7/12: Understanding Pedophilia Dr. Fred Berlin, supporter of normalization of pedophilia

Below is an interview with Dr. Fred Berlin, from John Hopkins http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/psychiatry/expert_team/faculty/B/Berlin.html on helping understanding pedophilia. Dr. Berlin is a supporter of B4U-ACT http://b4uact.org/science/symp/2011/Proceedings.pdf
"Keynote: On the Paraphilias, including Pedophilia, from a Psychiatric Perspective 3
Fred S. Berlin, M.D., Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD"
He feels that pedophilia is a sexual orientation. I deeply disagree, this seems to take away pedophiles responsibility for their actions. He has some valid concerns about their distorted views and inability to look objectively at their actions. He mentions protecting children but the main focus is on helping the pedophile and not on protecting children. Even when callers challenge Dr. Berlin on pedophiles who threaten and scare children to keep children quiet he tries to make excuses that it isn't the pedophile that is doing that but other disorders. I'm mostly paraphrasing below from the interview from about 33:00 minutes to 34:35:
"Pedophiles that threaten and scare children gets into something else other than pedophilic orientation. They are selfishness and their characterological make up. Those people would be more difficult to deal with. The fact of the matter is that most of the people I have treated were as much into deceiving themselves they could convince themselves that the child likes the experience and I like so it must be okay. This is much more about a self deceptive process they haven't been in touch with the psychological confusion that their actions can cause. Rather than a conscience malicious disregard for that youngster."
Almost all of the pedophiles I have posted and blogged about used some type of coercion to entice the child. All used some form of grooming and most work in a field that gives them access to children, yet Dr. Berlin doesn't address this aspect of pedophilia at all. He uses the excuse that if a pedophile seeks treatment there is fear that if they had abused a child that the MD would have to notify authorities. IMO a pedophile who is self aware enough to realize that they would do damage to a child and doesn't sexually abuse a child shouldn't fear getting treatment. They know that they haven't done something wrong. There are pedophiles who are self aware enough to know this. Other pedophiles get pissed at them and call them anti's because of their skewed beliefs that play a role in their acting on their attraction.

He basically glosses over the topic of whether or not pedophiles are created. I believe he glossed this over because if pedophiles can be created then it pedophilia can't be a sexual orientation.

The other thing that Dr. Berlin states is that pedophiles can be successfully treated. If so that would be great. The only thing I have found that supports this is chemical castration. Which doesn't stop the attraction to children but the desire/impulse to have sex with them. We need to remember that B4U-ACT is an agency that was started by pedophile Michael Melsheimer  who was arrested and convicted and sent to jail for sexually abusing children. I am interested in knowing if Dr. Berlin felt that Melsheimer was treated successfully? My guess is no since Melsheimer used coercion, manipulation, and grooming to commit his crimes. Since Dr. Berlin said those who use coercion and threats isn't specific to their pedophilic orientation, but other issues.

If you want to listen to his radio interview you just have to click on listen to open in a new tab and then the interview starts playing. I listened to all but about 10 minutes and just couldn't listen any longer. Important to know what the side of normalizing pedophilia has to say. Have a great day, Rosie

No behavior is more reviled in America than pedophilia. Dr. Fred Berlin, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, believes in the necessity of criminal penalties for pedophiles, but, he argues, thinking of pedophilia solely as a criminal mindset hamstrings our ability to control it. Berlin regards pedophilia as a treatable mental disorder. He'll join Doug on Tuesday to discuss our understanding of pedophilia and how we can manage and treat it before it leads to a pernicious incide
