America’s most wanted paedophile fights extradition on grounds it will breach his human rights to be jailed for life

I actually laughed when I read this story. This predator pedophile is actually is making the claim that if he gets extradited back to the US that his human rights will be violated. Wow! he's on the run for 17 years for harming children and then re-offends again in the UK and Ireland and he's worried about his human right's being violated. He has violated the rights of several children. Why should his human rights be more important then those of the children he abused? IMO they shouldn't. He is a criminal who has been on the lamb for 17 years. He needs to be held accountable for his behavior. I think he is more worried that if he becomes civilly committed in Minnesota that he won't have access to more children to prey on.

I am very surprised that this woman married him knowing he has harmed children. I hope he does get extradited back to the US. The children he harmed need to have their day in court. Rosie

America’s most wanted paedophile, who has spent 17 years on the run, is fighting extradition to the U.S. on the grounds he will die in prison if convicted.
Shawn Sullivan, 42, who is married to a Ministry of Justice policy manager, claims he is at 'high risk' of being locked up for life in a detention centre in Minnesota - which would breach his human rights.
The predator has been wanted in the U.S. since 1994 for allegedly molesting two 11-year-old girls and having unlawful sex with a girl of 14.

He fled to Ireland where he was convicted of sexually assaulting two 12-year-old girls before being held in London.
Sick Sullivan, who lives in Barnes with Sarah Smith, 34, who he was allowed to marry last year while on remand in Wandsworth Prison.
At a High Court hearing today Sullivan’s lawyers said he is willing to return to face trial if he is given an assurance he will not be subjected to 'civil commitment' proceedings.

In America paedophilia is also considered to be a mental disorder and civil commitment is when sex offenders are locked up indefinitely as they are deemed too dangerous to be on the streets.
Sullivan, who is originally from the U.S., faces up to 25 years on each count if he is found guilty.
Ben Brandon, representing him, said: 'Mr Sullivan says he will return to face trial in Minnesota but he is concerned about the prospect that, acquitted or convicted, he will be incarcerated for the rest of his natural life which is obviously a clear and fragrant breach of his human rights.'

'We say the statistics and evidence show there is the extreme likelihood that if committed this appellant will die in custody'

Mr Brandon added the number of sex offenders impounded by the State of Minnesota had shot up by 85 per cent since a former prisoner who had recently been released raped and murdered a woman in November 2003.
This was expected to rise further over the next 10 years with a total of 1,100 prisoners being kept behind bars.
Under U.S. law prisoners incarcerated this way have the right to appeal every six months but Mr Brandon said the process was complex and so far no one has ever been released.
He said: 'This process could happen even if he is not found guilty as it is a civil hearing.
'We say the statistics and evidence show there is the extreme likelihood that if committed this appellant will die in custody.'
The hearing continues.
